Large Turquoise-Blue Budai Figure, after Zaccagni Florence, 1950s Model
CHF 210
A large and heavy ceramic Budai figure with vivid turquoise-blue glaze, expressive modelling and a strong decorative presence. The seated figure shows Budai, often known as the Laughing Buddha, with a joyful expression, rounded belly and richly folded robe.
The form closely corresponds to a marked Zaccagni Florence example from the 1950s, recorded by Cambi Casa d’Aste as a large seated Buddha figure in earthenware with turquoise enamel decoration. This example, however, is unmarked; therefore, the piece is described carefully as after or in the manner of the Zaccagni Florence model, rather than as a confirmed Zaccagni work.
The cobalt-turquoise glaze is concentrated on the robe and folds, creating a strong contrast with the grey-brown unglazed areas. With its height of approx. 28 cm and weight of 4.8 kg, the figure has a substantial, grounded presence.
A characterful mid-century ceramic object — decorative, unusual and with an interesting Italian design reference.
Period / Dating: this unmarked example probably 1950s or later

Dimensions:
Height: approx. 30 cm, Weight: approx. 4.8 kg
Colour: Turquoise-blue / cobalt-blue glaze, grey-brown unglazed areas
Style Category: Mid-Century Modern — 1940–1970 / Italian decorative ceramics

Technical / Material Note: The figure is very heavy for its size. The grey-brown interior has a mineral-looking surface and slight mineral scent.
