Graphic Lines — Hornsea ‘Summit’ Salt & Pepper, 1960s

CHF 85

Tall, tapered and wonderfully graphic.

Designed by John Clappison for Hornsea Pottery, this pair of Summit salt and pepper shakers dates from the early 1960s. The slender ceramic forms are deeply fluted, with charcoal-black glaze filling the vertical grooves against a warm cream ground.

Introduced in 1960, Summit was part of Clappison’s experiments with shape, texture and glaze that helped give Hornsea its distinctive modern identity. The one- and three-hole tops distinguish salt from pepper, while the original filling stoppers remain underneath.
