Ottaviani Sterling Silver & Enamel Playing Card Box, Italy, 1960s–1970s

A striking mid-century playing card box by Ottaviani, the Italian silver house from Recanati, dating most likely from the 1960s–1970s.
The box is made from warm rosewood / palisander-type wood and fitted with a raised decorative lid panel in sterling silver and enamel. The design is wonderfully theatrical: a symmetrical central motif with stylised mask-like forms, scroll details and all four playing-card suits — hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades — worked into the composition. Deep red and black enamel create a bold contrast against the reflective silver surface.
The lid is signed Ottaviani and carries silver marks, including a clearly visible 925 mark. The interior is divided into two compartments and contains two complete decks of playing cards.
Ottaviani boxes from this period are sought after for their combination of fine Italian silverwork, enamel decoration and decorative functionality. This example is particularly appealing because the playing-card theme is directly connected to the box’s purpose, making it both practical and collectible.

Condition: Good vintage condition with visible age-related wear. The silver shows patina, oxidation and light surface marks consistent with age. There are some losses / missing inlay areas to the enamel decoration, including at the top right jester motif, the red enamel on the left heart section and the lower right corner near the spade. The wooden box shows light age-related wear.
