Renato Casaro “Invitation” Gallery Edition, 100 × 140 cm, 1992 — Boris Karloff Variant

CHF 350

A bold large-format poster by Italian illustrator Renato Casaro, created in 1992 and titled “Invitation”.

The image is a pop-culture reinterpretation of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, replacing the biblical scene with a gathering of classic Hollywood and cultural icons. Marilyn Monroe takes the central position, surrounded by figures including Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, Elvis Presley, Clark Gable, John Wayne, Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Cary Grant, Fred Astaire, Marlon Brando and Boris Karloff.

Renato Casaro is one of Italy’s most influential film poster illustrators, known internationally for his expressive, cinematic poster work. With Invitation, he moves from film poster language into a playful and highly detailed homage to cinema history, celebrity culture and one of the most recognisable compositions in Western art.

This example is the Boris Karloff variant, one of two known versions of the motif. The alternative version features Groucho Marx in place of Boris Karloff / Frankenstein’s monster. The present version is therefore especially interesting for collectors of Casaro, classic cinema and pop-cultural reinterpretations of art history.

A striking, conversation-starting piece with strong visual presence — ideal for a cinema room, gallery wall, collector’s interior or design-led living space.
