Pair of Murano Black‑and‑Gold Sommerso Lamps with Rigadin Ribbing, 1950s–70s

CHF 790

A striking pair of Italian Murano glass lamp bases crafted using a sophisticated combination of sommerso, rigadin dritto, oro (gold leaf), and avventurina techniques. The vertically ribbed bodies encase deep black glass enriched with shimmering gold leaf and metallic flecks, all submerged within a thick layer of clear cristallo. This interplay of texture and luminosity is characteristic of mid‑century Murano production.
The techniques used here were mastered and popularised by several important Murano studios. Carlo Scarpa developed the sommerso method in the 1930s at Venini, while Flavio Poli and Seguso Vetri d’Arte made the style world‑famous in the 1950s. Other Murano houses known for combining sommerso, oro and ribbed mould‑blown forms include Mandruzzato, Galliano Ferro, Formia, and Arte Nuova. Although attribution is not possible without labels, the craftsmanship and material language strongly align with this mid‑century Murano tradition.
Mounted on clear glass pedestals with brass fittings, the pair presents as luxurious, sculptural lighting objects — ideal for refined interiors.
