Antique Lacquered Papier-Mâché Box with Gilded Asian Scene
CHF 195
An elegant antique box made from dense, hand-moulded papier-mâché, finished with traditional lacquerwork. Its surface features a finely painted, gilded Asian domestic scene—with pavilions, figures, and a bridge—rendered in meticulous detail. This technique, popular in East Asia and later adopted in European decorative arts, produced surprisingly sturdy forms that resemble wood. The hinged lid closes securely with a brass catch, opening to a black lacquered interior. A striking and functional decorative object with history.
